 In its ongoing effort to expand programs and potential, Skyrocket 2008 will feature an evening session especially for high school girls. "We just decided to take the plunge," reported Skyrocket Director, Coach Doug Lucas. "And the next thing you know, the program was a 'go'!"
Four high school girls have already registered for the girls' evening clinic, which will meet simultaneous with the guys' clinic, but will feature specialized and unique coaching. "One key we had to overcome," explained Coach Lucas: "We had to bring in a 2nd specialty trainer." Once the program reached critical mass, Coach Lucas quickly gave the go-ahead for the 2nd trainer, Humberto Trejo. "We believe 'Beto' is the perfect choice for the job," Added Lucas.  We recently caught up with special Guest Coach Greg Gidman to grill him about his philosophy on attacking and defending.
Skyrocket: "Coach Gidman, when you're training players about defense, what do you stress?" Coach Gidman: "I emphasize personal responsibility as a defender and how to cover for one another defensively. A little bit of the two are stronger than one idea.  We recently caught up with Skyrocket's special guest coach for 2008, Greg Gidman. We asked the question, "What will you be training the players with regard to dribbling and heading the ball?" He answered, "I will teach and demo some of the Dutch Coerver techniques. We'll train on these using relay races, gradually increasing the speed of execution. Fast foot skills will be critical for player development in this modern era of soccer and I will have them go through a series of techniques to help them with developing their fast twitch muscle fibers."
